How to Clean and Condition Your Car’s Interior

Cleaning the interior of your car is essential for maintenance and value. If there is too much trash and debris on the floor or dashboard, it may get in the way of your driving. If the windows are too dirty, the dirt will prevent you from seeing oncoming vehicles, which may cause a crash. It is also important for the appearance and value of your car. In addition, ensuring that it looks good will increase one’s self-esteem in social situations. With some simple supplies, you can clean the interior of your vehicle.

Step 1 Decluttering the Car

Remove irrelevant items.

You should bring out all valuables and stuff that could get in the way, such as work and gym bags, children's toys, books and magazines. This could be a good timing to organize the forgotten items in your car.

Remove all recyclable items.

Water bottles, paper and cardboard items should be placed in recycling containers. If you want to clean the car in the driveway, you can place the recycling container near the car to make it easier to dispose of the recyclables. Take them out of the car and put them directly into the recycling container.

Remove all the rubbish.

Put all the garbage in the garbage bag. You may have to wear gloves for this step, especially if there is unpleasant garbage in the car. After emptying the car, keep the trash bag at hand, as you may need it later in the cleaning process.

Step 2 Cleaning the Central Console

Wipe the center console.

Wet the cloth with some household cleaner or glass cleaner. Work from the cleanest areas to the dirtiest area, leaving garbage in the end.

Clean the dashboard area, steering wheel and center console. You also need to wipe the gearstick and the inner door pockets. In addition to wipes, you can also use car cleaning wipes.

Remember to use a clean cloth, otherwise you will just redistribute the mess you just cleaned up.

If you have time, you can use a cotton swab to wipe away dust in hard-to-reach areas, such as detailing on the steering wheel.

You can use a rag or car cleaning rag to remove the dust from the cup holder.

Clean the buttons on the dashboard.

Use a damp cloth to clean the buttons on the dashboard. Then, dry the buttons with a clean cloth. You can also use a flathead screwdriver. Wrap a rag around the top of the screwdriver. Then, run the rag along the buttons to remove any dust that may have accumulated.

Use an old toothbrush to detail the car.

Use an old, soft bristle toothbrush to clean hard spots on the inner door and console, such as leather grain. The textured surface on the door or steering wheel can be treated with an old toothbrush. Brush away dirt in a circular motion.

Step 3 Cleaning the Inside Windows

Dampen a microfiber towel with window cleaner.

Spray some window cleaner on the microfiber towel. Microfiber towels are great for cleaning windows because they help remove stubborn stains and avoid streaks.

It is best to avoid ammonia. If there is ammonia in the glass cleaner, it may dry out the plastic in the car and damage the windows. Make sure that the cleaner meets the recommendations for tinted windows.

Scrub the windows.

Use microfiber towels to clean the windshield, side windows, rear windows and skylights. Clean the inside of each window with circular motions.

Polish with circular motions.

Turn the microfiber towel over to the clean side and polish the windows to remove any streaks. Pay special attention to the corners and edges of windows. If necessary, use cleaner and polish again.

Step 4 Cleaning the Seats and Upholstery

Clean the floor mats.

Before vacuuming, you should remove the floor mats to get to the dirt below. If your car has a plastic floor mat, you can remove it from the vehicle and shake off the dirt. Then, hose it down with a garden hose and let it dry. If your vehicle has a carpet mat, you can vacuum it in the car or outside. After vacuuming the interior, put the mat back into your car.

Vacuum from top to bottom.

First, vacuum the ceiling of the car, then gradually work your way down to the floor. You should use the appropriate nozzles for the different surfaces of your car:

You will need the upholstery nozzle to vacuum the seats, headliner and other upholstered areas of your car. To clean up the crevices in the seats and seat pockets, you can use your vacuum cleaner's crevice tool. When it comes to hard plastic and vinyl, consider using the dust brush. You can use the floor brush to clean the carpet on the floor of your car.

Move the seat to hard-to-reach areas.

To clean the front seats, you need to push the seats all the way forward or backward. Then, use the crevice tool to pick up any debris or dirt from under the front seats.

Clean the leather seats.

Leather seats must be conditioned and cleaned, otherwise they will crack and dry out. To clean leather seats, use a soft brush and a suitable cleaner such as saddle soap. Then maintain the seats.

If you're using a new detergent, try it in an inconspicuous small area first. If the new product works well, then clean the seats with it. If the leather is badly cracked and the paint is worn out, the seats may need to be replaced.

Clean your fabric upholstered seats.

Check your vehicle’s manual to see if you can use approved cleaning cleaners on your upholstery. First, clean up the seats. Then use a foam or other cleaning agent on the seats. Finally vacuum the seats again.

You can also use a carpet cleaner on your upholstered seats. In this case, you can clean the car seats while cleaning the household carpets.

Do not use window cleaners on upholstered fabric seats.

Use a stain remover to remove stubborn stains.

Candy, chocolate, crayons and other products can cause unfortunate car seat stains. You can use a stain remover product and a clean cloth to remove the stains.

If you notice the candy or crayons melting on the back seat, you can use ice cubes to stop the melting, and then remove the object.

Step 5 Finishing Up

Air out the car seats.

If you have used a lot of cleaning products on the seat, it is best to exhaust the car. Therefore, if the weather is fine, you can open all the doors and windows of the car to circulate air in the car.

Install air freshener.

If you want to use perfume in your car, you can spray or install a new air freshener product. If you are a smoker, you can find a special air freshener to eliminate the smell of smoke. If you want to eliminate the smell of old cars, you can use additional air fresheners and water-based fragrances.

Look for longer lasting air fresheners, especially when you don’t clean your car often.

Put everything back in place.

Put the mats back on the vehicle’s floor. Place the seats back to their normal position. Put those items you removed before for cleanup back to your car in an orderly manner.
