How to Clean Stained Toilets - Clean A Toilet Bowl Properly in Five Steps 2021

Cleaning the toilet, one of the basic tasks, may seem difficult to some people, but this task can be completed easily and quickly with the right tool and some clever skills, such as knowing how to clean the toilet with Coke. Whether you are keeping home fresh or you want to make sure the workplace is comfortable, our carefully picked top five methods for cleaning dirty toilets will help you keep everything neat and tidy at once.

1. Do Preliminary Cleaning

Basic cleaning is necessary before you start cleaning a heavily polluted toilet. Put the cleaning tools together first.

These are what you need:

  • Rubber gloves
  • A clean toilet brush
  • A commercial cleaner (or a good quality thick toilet cleaner) or natural toilet cleaners like baking soda and vinegar

Remember to decrease the water level in the toilet first to expose as much of the china as possible. Pump the water away using the toilet brush until there is almost no water. Next, apply the toilet cleaner you chosen (preferably one with a scale remover in it) to the top inside edge of the toilet bowl so it can flow down slowly and cover the bowl. Scrub the bowl with a toilet brush, then let it sit for about 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

2. Soak Overnight With White Vinegar

White vinegar is your best choice when you need to find out how to remove stubborn stains from the toilet bowl, and an overnight soak is great to banish those grubby marks once and for all.

  • Pour about 150ml of white vinegar into the bowl and close the lid.
  • Leave it for at least nine hours, or overnight.
  • If the stubborn stains are around the rim, place a vinegar-soaked toilet paper over the rim to ensure maximum contact between the vinegar and the stain. If any stubborn stains stay on the rim, then scrub at the stain using a green scouring pad.

3. Deep Clean With Coke

No, you cannot rest just yet – some of the trickiest stains like rust rings can be easily removed with a dose of everyone’s favourite fizzy drink, and this trick is efficient for cleaning a very stained toilet bowl. Coke contains phosphoric acid that is the same ingredient in toilet cleaners.

Lower water level in the bowl with toilet brush as described in the initial clean instructions.

  • Spill a full can of Coke (330ml) around the rim of your toilet bowl, making sure it fully coats the bowl.
  • Leave the Coke in the bowl for about an hour (more if you like), so the acids in the Coke begin to loosen the stains.
  • Scrub with a clean toilet brush and flush away the stains.

4. Clean With Baking Soda And Vinegar

If splashing Coke into the toilet seems a bit extravagant to you, then going with baking soda and vinegar is a pocket-friendly alternative to commercial cleaners. It is both effective and environmentally friendly, and is a useful technique for cleaning a dirty toilet. The mixing of baking soda and vinegar will produce carbonic acid that is a super effective natural cleaner, perfect for removing yellow stains on the toilet.

Lower the water in your toilet bowl as described in the above initial clean instructions.

  • Pour about 250ml of white vinegar into the toilet bowl, and let it sit for about 2 minutes.
  • Add three tablespoons of baking soda, then another two cups of vinegar.
  • Wait to watch the bubbles fizz up.
  • Leave it sit for about five minutes.
  • Scrub with a clean toilet brush, and get in all the nooks and crannies and down the u-bend. If the toilet brush is too large to get into the bend, use a green scourer.
  • Flush the toilet.

5. Polish Up With Pumice

Pumice is an effective natural toilet cleaner that’s great for banishing stubborn stains, including persistent limescale rings.

  • First, soak the pumice stone in warm water.
  • Gently scrub the stain until it’s removed.
  • Flush to rinse.

Both the pumice and the stained surface should be wet to avoid scratching.

If one method doesn’t work for you, either repeat it or try another method. You may find that using vinegar and baking soda or coke isn’t quite enough to get rid of all those stains, but following up with a quick pumice scrub brings you the perfect finish you’ve been hoping for.

Safety Precautions

  • Always wear rubber gloves. This will protect your skin from cleansers and bacteria. The use of rubber gloves can minimize the risk of spreading bacteria, and more importantly, carefully remove and disinfect the bacteria after each use.
  • Always work in a well-ventilated area to avoid any adverse effects caused by inhaling the vapor in the detergent.
  • Using natural products is generally safer than using harsh chemicals in commercial cleaners, but you still need to follow some safety precautions.
  • Before using any cleaner, make sure to read the manufacturer's instructions. Certain materials do not respond well to abrasive cleaners or vigorous scrubbing. If you can't find any instructions, test the method in an unobtrusive place before cleaning the entire toilet.
  • If you are using commercial cleaners, DO NOT mix them together. The vapor produced by the combination of bleach and proprietary toilet cleaner is highly toxic.
