The Best Kitchen Cleaning Routine – Everyone Needs to Know

Are you ready? Let’s get started!

  1. Clear away all the unnecessary items on the counter: messy mail, cookbooks, permission sheets waiting for signature.
  2. Fill the sink with hot water and a few drops of dish soap. Put in items that need soaking, such as crisper drawers, dish racks, and microwave turntables.
  3. Empty the refrigerator and throw away all the expired items. Place dirty food-storage containers into the sink to soak. Use a paper towel or a rag sprayed with a non-toxic all-purpose cleaner wipe down the shelves from top to bottom.
  4. Remove dust from the high places, knock off dirt and debris onto the floor, and sweep up them later. With a retractable dust collector, starting from above the sink and work around the room, clean the upper corners, lamps, and tops of the cabinets including the top of the refrigerator. After returning to the sink, you can move on.
  5. Clean the upper cabinets, mounted microwave ovens, and all the other items on the walls. Spray the all-purpose cleaner on the microwave oven interior and let it sit for two minutes. Wipe down the exterior with a damp soapy cloth. (If it is made of stainless steel, try to use a cloth dipped in diluted white vinegar instead of soapy water to clean any fingerprints.) Then, wipe the doors and handles of the upper cabinets and any other items (frames, hooks, vent grates) in the room. Wipe down the backsplash with a fresh damp, soapy cloth.
  6. Return to the microwave oven. Wipe the solution from the inside with a dry cloth. It does not matter if the crumbs fall onto the stove or the floor.
  7. Spray all-purpose cleaner on the tops of the stove and let it sit for a few minutes. If there are stubborn stains, add a powdery scrub that will not scratch.
  8. Put the items soaked in the sink into the dishwasher or wash them by hand. Don't drain the sink for now.
  9. Use a clean, dry cloth to wipe the stovetop, and let the crumbs fall to the floor. It is more efficient to get them at the end. When it’s done, you need to change the cloth to prevent the grease from transferring to another surface.
  10. Use a glass cleaner or multi-surface formula (spray it on the cloth instead of the appliance) or cleaning wipes to clean the coffeemaker, toaster, stand mixer, and other small appliances from top to bottom. Dip drip trays and crumb catchers in the warm, soapy water remaining in the sink, then rinse and dry.
  11. Scrub the countertops in small circular motions with a cleaner formulated for your surface.
  12. Wipe the refrigerator doors, the front of the dishwasher, and the oven, using a cloth dipped in clean soapy water (or diluted white vinegar if the door is stainless steel). Pay special attention to the handles and edges. Get a soft toothbrush or a cloth-wrapped spatula to remove dust from tight areas, such as the folds of the refrigerator seal. Then, clean the sides of the dishwasher door with all-purpose cleaner or a cloth dipped in a mixture of hot, soapy water and white vinegar. (You can use this solution to clean stovetops and worktops, unless they are marble, granite or other porous stone.)
  13. Use a damp, soapy cloth to wipe down the lower cabinets and drawers.
  14. Drain the sink and rinse with hot water. Use a mild abrasive cleaner and a microfiber cloth to scrub the basin; rinse with hot water. Clean the faucet and handles.
  15. Empty the trash can, then wipe the inside and the top of the can with a cleaning wipe, and finally replace the garbage bag.
  16. Use an electro-static dry duster to sweep the floor. Get to the baseboards and under the cabinets, where crumbs may be hidden. Pull out the appliances and reach the spaces near the walls. Then use a mop (or a steam cleaner if you have one) to clean from the corner furthest from the entrance of the room, and then use a bucket. (Dipping the mop in the sink may contaminate the items that end up in your mouth.) Pour the dirty water outside or down the toilet.
  17. Take a rest on the sofa. You’re done!
